II Kings

In the purpose of this book we are encouraged to look to the Holy Spirit to guide us and keep us in the Truth. This can be done only as we, with old Elisha, pray for a double portion of God’s Holy Spirit. Before Elijah departed from this earth, he sensed the need of power in the life of Elijah. So he in the language of today, said: “what will you have, Elisha. Before I go, home to be with the Lord”?. He stood in need of and asked for the very same thing Christ knew His followers would need when He was caught up to be with the Lord of hosts after His resurrection, namely, the Holy Spirit and the power of the Spirit (Luke 24:46-49). Elisha wanted and needed this double portion. So did Peter, James, and John and all the rest of the 120 in the upper room. They received the Spirit and His power. And with this thought in mind may we ask for this need, and rely upon the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and keep it in us (John 16:13, 14:26).

Uphold me with Y Your our free Spir Spirit it (Ps. 51:12)
The Holy Spirit always works freely, and leads the soul into freedom. He works within us. We need His constant presence, power and grace. Except He upholds us we shall certainly fall. David had fallen. He deeply felt his weakness, and therefore prayed to be upheld by God’s free Spirit. Let this be our daily prayer. It will never be unsuitable. We should have failed Him before this, if God had not kept us; and we may fall any day, except we are upheld by His invisible arm. This day satan may lay some snare before us. This day our evil hearts may deceive us. This day the world may lay some unexpected bait before us, and if so, unless the Holy Spirit opens our eyes, give us fresh supplies of grace, or hold us back by an invisible power, we shall disgrace our profession, dishonor God, and wound our conscience. Remember Christians, we are deeply indebted to the Holy Spirit for our preservation. Realize today your obligation and dependence, and while you do so, seek the constant teaching, guiding and keeping of the blessed Comforter.
